Validation of GPM Rainfall and Drop Size Distribution Products through Disdrometers in Italy

The high relevance of satellites for collecting information regarding precipitation at global scale implies the need a continuous validation satellite products to ensure good data quality over time and provide feedback updating improving retrieval algorithms. However, validating using measurements collected by sensors ground is still challenging task. To date, Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) aboard Core Satellite Global Measurement (GPM) mission only active sensor able provide, scale, vertical profiles rainfall rate, radar reflectivity, Drop Size Distribution (DSD) parameters from space. In this study, we compare near surface GPM retrievals with long series seven laser disdrometers in Italy since launch mission. comparison shows limited differences performances different algorithms, be they dual- or single-frequency, although most cases, dual-frequency algorithms present better performances. Furthermore, agreement between ground-based estimates depends on considered variable. very promising rain reflectivity factor, mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm), while improved normalized gamma DSD intercept parameter (Nw).
